Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about AI CV tailoring, ATS filters, UK cover letters, and how JobAssistAI works.

What is an ATS and how do I optimise my CV for it?

An ATS (Applicant Tracking System) is software that most UK employers use to automatically screen CVs before a human reads them. It scans your CV for keywords that match the job description. If your score is too low, your application is filtered out regardless of how qualified you are. Industry estimates suggest up to 75% of CVs are rejected at this stage.

To optimise for ATS: mirror the exact language from the job description, avoid tables or complex formatting, use standard section headings (Experience, Education, Skills), and never place key information in headers or footers where ATS software cannot read it.

JobAssistAI scores your CV against any job description and shows exactly which keywords are missing before you apply, so you can fix the gap in seconds rather than guessing after the fact.

How do I tailor my CV for a specific job in the UK?

Start with the job description and highlight the key requirements: skills, qualifications, and experience the employer has listed. Then adjust your CV to lead with the most relevant experience for that role, and use the same terminology the employer uses. If they say "stakeholder management", use that phrase rather than "stakeholder engagement", as ATS software looks for exact matches.

Remove or deprioritise experience that is not relevant to this specific role. Most UK employers read CVs in under 30 seconds, so the first half of page one needs to match the role immediately.

JobAssistAI does this automatically: paste or capture the job description, and the AI adapts your existing CV to match it, restructuring emphasis, swapping keywords, and tightening language without you rewriting from scratch.

What is the difference between a CV and a resume in the UK?

In the UK, a CV (Curriculum Vitae) is the standard document for job applications, typically two pages, covering your full career history in reverse chronological order. A resume is the US equivalent, usually one page and more condensed.

UK employers expect a CV, not a resume. Key differences: UK CVs do not include a photo (to comply with discrimination law), do not include your date of birth, and often include a references section or the phrase "references available on request". US resume conventions such as a one-page limit or an objective statement are not standard in the UK and may work against you.

JobAssistAI generates CVs in UK format by default, so you never have to worry about applying US conventions by mistake.

How do I write a cover letter for UK employers?

A strong cover letter for UK employers is concise (three to four short paragraphs, under one page), professional in tone, and tailored to the specific role and company. Open with why you are applying to that employer specifically, not just why you want the job type.

Cover the two or three strongest reasons why your experience matches the role. Close with a confident, forward-looking sentence about the opportunity. Avoid generic openers like "I am writing to apply for the position of...". UK employers value genuine interest and relevance over length.

Use the company's own language from the job description to show you have read it carefully. JobAssistAI generates cover letters from your Master Profile and shapes them to the specific job posting automatically, so every letter sounds like you wrote it specifically for that role.

Which job boards are best for finding work in the UK?

The three most widely used UK job boards are Reed.co.uk, Indeed UK, and TotalJobs. Between them they cover the majority of UK listings across all sectors and experience levels. LinkedIn is also widely used, particularly for professional and management roles.

For specialist sectors: CV-Library covers a broad range across industries, Glassdoor UK includes salary data alongside listings, NHS Jobs covers all roles in the National Health Service, and CWJobs is widely used in the technology sector. Most roles are posted across multiple boards simultaneously, so checking two or three boards is usually sufficient rather than monitoring all of them.

The JobAssistAI Chrome extension works across all of the above, so you can capture any listing and generate a tailored application without leaving the page or switching tabs.

How does the JobAssistAI Chrome extension work?

The JobAssistAI Chrome extension adds a floating side panel to any UK job board listing, including Reed, Indeed UK, TotalJobs, LinkedIn, and any employer careers page. When you open a job listing, the extension reads the job description and gives you three tools directly in the panel.

The Job Match panel shows how well your Master Profile matches the role, with a percentage score and the key skills the employer is looking for. The Cover Letter panel generates a tailored letter from your profile with one click. You review and copy it when you are happy. The Application Q&A panel reads any additional questions on the application form (such as motivational questions or competency questions) and drafts answers for you to review and edit before they are filled in.

The extension never submits anything on your behalf. You remain fully in control of every step. Install it free from the Chrome Web Store. A JobAssistAI account is required to use it.

Is JobAssistAI free to use?

Yes. JobAssistAI has a free Explorer plan that lets you try all core features with no credit card required. The Explorer plan includes CV tailoring, cover letter generation, the ATS score checker, the job application tracker, and the Chrome extension.

Paid plans start from £3.99 per week (Quick Start), with fortnightly (£5.99) and monthly (£9.99) options available. Paid plans give you higher usage limits and priority AI responses. Add-on credit packs are also available if you need extra capacity without upgrading your plan.

Yes. JobAssistAI is built and operated by Andrea Technology Solutions Ltd, a UK-registered company, and is fully GDPR-compliant. Your data is stored on Google Cloud infrastructure within the EU.

Your CV and profile information is used only to generate your applications and is never sold, shared with third-party employers, or used to train AI models without your consent.
